UNDERSTANDING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Tooth position.
The way your bite meets.

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth rather than covering or reshaping them. A plan considers appearance, the way upper and lower teeth meet, and the health of the tissues supporting the teeth.

These illustrations show concerns to assess. Your teeth, bite and oral health help determine whether braces, aligners or specialist care are appropriate.

BRACES, CLEAR ALIGNERS & INVISALIGN

The appliance should
fit the treatment goal.

We focus on clear aligners for suitable cases. Traditional braces remain an option in selected situations where aligners cannot provide the movement needed. Your assessment comes first.

OUR PREFERRED APPROACH

Clear aligners

At Lombard Dental Studio, clear aligners are our preferred approach to orthodontic treatment when they are suitable for your teeth and bite. A sequence of removable trays guides the planned tooth movements, with consistent wear and progress reviews.

Invisalign is one clear-aligner system. Discuss your goals, the movements needed, and any attachments or other supporting measures before deciding on a plan.

FOR SELECTED CASES

Traditional braces

Traditional braces use attached brackets and wires to guide tooth movement. They require adjustments, careful cleaning, and changes to some food choices.

Braces are not our routine first choice. We consider them only in selected cases where clear aligners are not suitable for the movement required. Your assessment will clarify whether treatment at the studio or referral to an orthodontic specialist is appropriate.

Removable aligners require a prescribed wear routine and progress reviews.

Make the everyday routine part of the decision.

Ask about meals, cleaning, work or school, sport, and the wear schedule. A less visible appliance still needs daily commitment.

Tell the team if you expect difficulty following the routine. Treatment should be planned around both the movement required and your ability to manage the appliance.

ADULTS, TEENS & GROWING SMILES

Age changes the context.
It does not replace an assessment.

Your dental history, growth, oral health, and daily responsibilities help shape the recommendations. Not every concern needs immediate active treatment.

Adults

Discuss long-standing crowding, new spacing, or teeth that have shifted. Existing restorations and gum health are part of planning.

Teens

Compare suitable options alongside school, activities, cleaning, and the ability to follow instructions. Development and the bite affect timing.

Early checks for children

The AAO recommends an orthodontic check by age seven. An early check may lead to monitoring or a specialist assessment, rather than braces straight away.

THE TREATMENT JOURNEY

Plan, move, review.
Then protect the position.

Timing varies with the movement, bite, appliance, health of the teeth and gums, and progress. Request an estimated sequence for your case and ask what could change it.

Assess the starting point

Discuss your goals and review teeth, gums, the bite, and appropriate records. Establish whether the concern is mainly tooth position, the bite, or something requiring specialist assessment.

Review the proposed movement

Compare suitable appliances, daily responsibilities, expected stages, and costs. Ask who will provide care and whether other dental treatment is needed first.

Treat & check progress

Follow the prescribed wear or appliance instructions and attend reviews. The plan may be adjusted as tooth movement and the bite are checked.

Maintain the position

Move to a retainer plan when active treatment ends. Understand wear, cleaning, replacement needs, and how follow-up will be managed.

AFTER BRACES OR ALIGNERS

Retainers are part
of the long-term plan.

Teeth can shift after active treatment. A prescribed retainer routine helps maintain their position, with ongoing reviews and replacement when needed.

Discuss fixed or removable options, cleaning, wear, and what to do if a retainer is lost, damaged, or no longer fits. Do not force an appliance that feels wrong.

DURING TREATMENT

Keep looking after
the teeth you are moving.

Orthodontic reviews and routine dental care serve different purposes. Continue examinations and cleaning while treatment progresses.

Clean around the appliance

Brush with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth. Ask how to clean around brackets, attachments, or fixed retainers.

Follow wear and food instructions

Use aligners as prescribed and follow the appliance-specific guidance for meals and activities. Protect against breakages and avoid skipping wear to suit an occasion.

Report a problem early

Contact the treating team about persistent discomfort, a broken appliance, or a tray that does not fit. Ask how urgent issues and review visits are managed.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Your orthodontic
questions.

Ask about suitable options, the treating provider, daily care, costs, and how the result will be maintained.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics addresses tooth alignment and how upper and lower teeth meet. Braces or aligners guide tooth movement, while retainers help maintain the position afterward. The goals and treatment depend on the individual teeth, bite, and supporting tissues.

Can orthodontics help with crowded teeth or gaps?

It may be appropriate for crowding, spacing, and some bite concerns. An assessment considers the cause, the available space, gum health, and the movement required. A gap or crooked tooth alone does not establish which treatment you need.

What is the difference between braces and clear aligners?

Braces use attached brackets and wires; clear aligners use a sequence of removable trays. Both require planning and progress reviews. The suitable approach depends on the movement needed, your bite, and how well the daily routine fits you. At Lombard Dental Studio, we prefer clear aligners when suitable. Traditional braces are considered only in selected cases where aligners are not appropriate; specialist referral may be recommended.

Is Invisalign the same as clear aligners?

Invisalign is a brand of clear aligners. Not every clear aligner is an Invisalign product. Ask which system is recommended, how it would work for your teeth, and what the plan includes.

Can adults have orthodontic treatment?

Yes. Healthy teeth can often be moved in adulthood. Gum health, existing crowns or other restorations, missing teeth, and the bite can affect the plan. An adult assessment should consider these details alongside appearance.

When should a child have an orthodontic check?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age seven. This is an assessment, not a recommendation that every child start braces. Some children need monitoring; others may benefit from early treatment or specialist evaluation.

Will I need an orthodontic specialist?

Some dental providers offer selected orthodontic treatments, while more complex tooth movement, growth, or jaw concerns may need specialist care. Ask who would provide treatment, which cases are treated at the studio, and whether a referral is recommended for yours.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Timing depends on the movements, bite, appliance, health of the teeth and gums, and how treatment progresses. Daily wear, appointments, breakages, or additional stages can affect the schedule. Ask for an estimated sequence for your own plan.

How much does orthodontics cost in Thousand Oaks?

Costs depend on the case and treatment course. Request an estimate explaining records, appliances, review visits, any additional procedures, refinements where relevant, and retainers. Confirm what is included and what may carry a separate fee.

Does insurance cover braces or Invisalign?

Some plans include orthodontic benefits, with eligibility rules, age limits, and lifetime maximums. Coverage may differ from ordinary dental benefits. Confirm your plan and expected personal costs before agreeing to treatment.

Do I need retainers after treatment?

Retention is part of maintaining tooth alignment. Teeth can shift after braces or aligners, so follow the prescribed retainer plan. Ask about the type, wear schedule, cleaning, and replacement costs before active treatment ends.

Is a nightguard the same as a retainer?

They have different purposes. A retainer maintains tooth position after treatment, while a nightguard is intended to protect against grinding or clenching wear. Do not substitute one for the other without discussing it with the treating dentist.

What if my teeth have shifted after earlier braces?

Bring your current or previous retainer if you have it. The dentist can assess the amount of change, the bite, and whether new retention or further active treatment is appropriate. Do not force a retainer that no longer fits.

How do I care for my teeth during treatment?

Continue dental examinations and cleaning, brush with fluoride toothpaste, and clean between teeth and around appliances as instructed. Follow the food and wear instructions for your device. Report persistent discomfort, a broken bracket, or an aligner that does not fit.
