WHY CUSTOM NIGHT GUARDS MATTER

Grinding can happen
without you noticing.

Bruxism means grinding or clenching your teeth. It can occur while you are awake or asleep, and its causes can involve more than one factor. A partner may hear nighttime grinding, or a dental exam may reveal wear you had not noticed.

Repeated grinding can damage teeth and restorations and contribute to sensitivity or muscle soreness. A night guard separates opposing teeth to help limit damage, while your dentist considers the symptoms and possible contributing factors.

TYPES OF NIGHT GUARDS

Compare your options.
Start with an assessment.

A dental mouthguard, bite guard, or occlusal splint may be recommended for different reasons. Material and design depend on your diagnosis, teeth, bite, and tolerance; one appliance does not suit every patient.

Custom-made night guards

Created from records of your teeth and fitted to your mouth. Your dental team can assess retention and contact with opposing teeth, adjust the appliance when needed, and review how it performs over time.

Pre-made or store-bought guards

Ready-made and home-molded options can have a lower purchase price, but their fit and materials vary. A poorly fitting appliance can cause problems. Ask about suitability rather than choosing based on price or softness alone.

Appliances for jaw concerns

Sometimes called TMJ guards, these require careful assessment of joint and muscle symptoms. A splint is one possible part of conservative care, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed cure or a way to permanently change your bite.

Aligners and retainers

Clear aligners move teeth and retainers help maintain their position. They are not interchangeable with a night guard. If you grind during orthodontic treatment, discuss a coordinated plan with your treating dentist.

TMJ NIGHT GUARDS

Jaw pain needs
its own assessment.

TMJ refers to the jaw joint; TMD describes disorders affecting the joints and chewing muscles. Grinding and jaw pain can occur together, but not every headache, click, or painful jaw is caused by bruxism.

Dr. Lebovich can examine your symptoms and discuss conservative options or referral when appropriate. Oral splints have limited evidence for treating TMD pain. Tell your dentist if a guard increases pain or changes how your teeth meet.

Painless clicking is common and does not necessarily require treatment. Ask for assessment if you have pain, locking, restricted movement, or a noticeable bite change.

INVISALIGN AND NIGHT GUARDS

Coordinate your protection
with your orthodontic plan.

If you grind or clench during Invisalign or another clear-aligner treatment, tell your treating dentist. Wearing trays does not mean the grinding habit is cured, and adding a guard without advice may interfere with treatment.

After treatment, you still need the recommended retention plan. Discuss how to protect your teeth while maintaining their position; a standard night guard should not be assumed to replace your retainer.

CARING FOR YOUR NIGHT GUARD

Keep it clean.
Keep checking the fit.

  • Rinse and clean gently after use, following your appliance instructions.
  • Use the recommended non-abrasive cleanser; avoid abrasive toothpaste.
  • Allow it to dry and store it in a ventilated case.
  • Avoid hot water and heat that can distort the appliance.
  • Bring it to checkups and ask about replacement when worn or damaged.

A guard’s lifespan depends on its material, your grinding forces, and care. Watch for cracks, thinning, persistent discomfort, or a changed fit rather than relying on a fixed replacement date.

FAQ ABOUT CUSTOM DENTAL NIGHT GUARDS

Your night-guard
questions.

From cost to Invisalign, bring your concerns to an appointment so we can discuss advice appropriate to your teeth and jaw.

What is a custom night guard?

A custom dental night guard is an appliance fitted to your teeth and bite. Also called an occlusal guard or bite splint, it creates a protective barrier against tooth-to-tooth contact. Your dentist determines whether it is appropriate for your grinding, clenching, or other dental concerns.

How much does a custom dental night guard cost in Thousand Oaks?

The fee depends on the recommended appliance, fitting requirements, and any additional assessment or treatment. Contact Lombard Dental Studio for a current estimate. Our team can explain the cost before you proceed; we have not listed an unconfirmed starting price.

Is a night guard covered by insurance?

Some dental plans provide benefits for a prescribed occlusal guard, but eligibility, limits, deductibles, and replacement rules vary. Ask our team to review your plan and confirm your expected out-of-pocket cost. Benefit verification is not a guarantee of payment.

How long does a custom night guard last?

Lifespan varies with the material, grinding forces, care, and changes in your teeth or bite. Heavy wear can mean earlier replacement. Bring your guard to dental checkups and arrange a review if it cracks, thins, feels loose, or stops fitting properly.

Can I wear a night guard with Invisalign?

Tell your dentist or orthodontist about grinding during clear-aligner treatment. Aligner trays are not a substitute for a prescribed night guard, and adding a guard over them without advice can interfere with fit or treatment. Discuss protection and retention again after alignment is complete.

What is the difference between custom and store-bought guards?

Custom guards are fitted to records of your teeth and checked by your dental team. Store-bought guards have less individual adjustment and may fit inconsistently. Cost, comfort, materials, and follow-up are worth comparing. Ask for advice if an over-the-counter guard causes discomfort or a change in your bite.

Can a night guard help with TMJ pain?

Some patients are offered an oral appliance as part of conservative care, but evidence for relieving TMD pain with splints is limited. Jaw pain has several possible causes, and an examination comes first. Tell your dentist if an appliance increases pain or changes your bite.

How do I clean my night guard?

Follow the instructions supplied for your guard. Rinse after use, clean gently with a soft brush and an appropriate non-abrasive cleanser, let it dry, and store it in a ventilated case. Avoid abrasive toothpaste and heat. Ask which cleaning products and schedule suit your appliance.

Will wearing a night guard stop me from grinding?

A guard primarily protects teeth. It does not necessarily eliminate grinding or clenching. Your dentist may also discuss daytime habits, stress management, medication review with your prescriber, or evaluation of relevant sleep concerns.

Do I need a night guard if I don’t notice grinding?

Some people do not realize they grind during sleep. Tooth wear, fractures, sensitivity, or jaw soreness can prompt assessment, but none proves bruxism on its own. Dr. Lebovich can evaluate the findings and discuss whether a guard or another next step is appropriate.
